WHY ROOT NOTE WELLNESS?

In music, the root note gives a chord its foundation. It's the stabilizing tone, the point from which the other notes take shape and find their relationship to one another. Together, they produce a single harmonic tone.

To note something is also to bring your awareness to it. The practice of mindfulness encourages us take notice of everything within ourselves and to stay present in each moment with complete acceptance.

I think of yoga in much the same way. In movement and meditation practices, we begin by grounding and centering ourselves. We create a stable foundation at the root, drawing energy upwards and cultivating awareness of our bodies, our breath, our thoughts, emotions and our environment. These stacked "notes" activating together can, in a way, create their own internal harmony for the practitioner.

So much of life asks us to respond urgently to what is happening around us. We're constantly distracted, with more of ourselves flowing outward than in. Yoga, meditation, and contemplative practices invite us to turn some of that listless energy around and pour it back into ourselves. We deserve it.
